Last Dollar Shaft – Vertical Shaft Bulkhead

MES designed and managed a project to close an 800’ deep mineshaft on a county roadway on Aspen Mountain. MES designed and installed a 28’ concrete plug to close the shaft and allow heavy truck traffic over the shaft collar.

Work involved construction at approximately 11,500 feet under late fall conditions, with snowstorms during construction. Underground work was performed by personnel hanging from ropes to create hitch in rock, form, and pour steel-reinforced high-early strength concrete bottom form for later plug pour. Installation included a drain system and subsidence monitoring stations.
